Position Summary:
Under general direction of the Engineering Manager this position will, plan, direct, supervise, and coordinate the system planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance of an electrical distribution system; prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for the installation, maintenance, repair and expansion of client electrical distribution system; to provide highly responsible and technical staff assistance; and to perform related work as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans construction and coordinates operation of facilities for transmitting power from distribution points to consumers: and overhead and underground lines in urban and rural areas.
    Prepares specifications and estimates costs.
  • Makes complex electrical computations to determine type and arrangement of circuits and size, type and number of pieces of equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and lightning arresters.
  • Computes sag and tension for specifications on wire and cable.
  • Plans layout of pole lines and underground cable and solves problems, such as determining height, location, spacing, guying, and insulating of poles
  • Responsible for and will apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings.
  • Assists project manager(s) to develop scope of work and conceptual design for projects.
    Provides engineering, construction, testing & commissioning support for various projects.
    Communicates and coordinates project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.
  • Ensures the quality and accuracy of work product within standards establish by client.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel with potential marketing responsibilities.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program with a Power Engineering emphasis.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in T&D design.
  • AutoCAD experience a plus.

Job Knowledge:

  • Engineering and Technology — Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services. Strong knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, including understanding of three-phase power systems. Strong knowledge of
    distribution design.
  • Building and Construction — Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction of telecommunications and power plant, houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
  • Administration and Management — Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

  • Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Public Safety and Security — Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Design — Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Some

Licenses, Certifications, Training Requirements:
A valid motor vehicle driver’s license in good standing required.
Professional Engineer license in good standing

Physical, Mental and Visual Demands:
Flow of work involves normal mental and visual attention along with manual coordination much of the time. Physical demands require occasionally lifting over 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
Most assignments are performed in an office type environment. Occasionally will be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including: hot and cold temperatures, rain, snow, dust, and wind. Will occasionally work at off-site locations. May include some physical labor and environmental distractions such as changes in climate and topography. Physical hazards may be present.

Travel approximately 20% of the time.
