175,000 U.S. Households Still Rely on Dial-Up Internet
Technology adoption is not linear. Even in the age of fast broadband, there still are about 175,000 households in the United States that rely on dial-up to get online, according to United States Census data presented by Reviews.org.
The article used data from the 2022 American Community Survey and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s ERS State Fact Sheet. The goal of the Review.org study was to track progress towards getting people connected.
The data shows that about 11.5 million households don’t have home internet. That number has been shrinking by 2% annually since 2015. About 4.3% of U.S. households don’t have a computer.
“An increasing number of households in the United States are getting home internet, but there are still millions of Americans who don’t have an internet connection in their home,” wrote Reviews.org staff writer Jacob Scholl in the post. “Federal data indicates states with higher rates of poverty also have higher numbers of homes without internet — but home internet rates in some of those states are growing quickly.”
The ten states with the lowest percentage of connected homes are: Mississippi (84.4% of homes connected), Louisiana (85.5%), West Virginia (86.7%), New Mexico (86.8%), Arkansas (86.9%), Alabama (87.6%), Oklahoma (88.7%), Kentucky (89.2%), South Carolina (89.2%), and Montana (89.4%).
Those ten most connected: New Hampshire (94.1%), Utah (93.8%), Washington (93.7%), California (93.5%), Colorado (93.3%), New Jersey (93.1%), Massachusetts (93%), Delaware (92.7%), Maryland (92.5%), and Oregon (92.5%).
Some states are making significant progress. The top ten states the percentage growth in connected households been 2021 and 2022 were Mississippi (24.3%), Arkansas (22.4%), Oklahoma (19.9%), Alaska (19.8%), Alabama (19.50%), Tennessee (17.7%), Kentucky (17.6%), Indiana (17%), New Mexico (17%), and Iowa (16.5%).
The report broke down which types of technology are being used. If found that 75.9% use DSL, cable, or fiber, 11.20% use a cellular data plan “with no other type of Internet subscription.” 6.7% use satellite Internet and 0.10% use dial-up.
