5G Americas Looks at the ITU’s Vision for 6G
5G Americas describes how the ITU’s path to 6G will impact the Americas with the publication of a white paper entitled “ITU’s IMT-230 Vision: Navigating Towards 6G in the Americas.”
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is developing the strategic vision for 6G in the IMT-2030 framework. It sets the groundwork for innovation, performance standards and international cooperation.
5G Americas’ white paper looks at the ITU’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence, expand connectivity and support emerging technology.
“The IMT-2030 vision is a critical step toward enabling a future 6G ecosystem, setting a roadmap for the evolution of mobile systems beyond 5G. Stakeholders from the Americas are encouraged to engage in the development of favorable technical details, particularly in the areas of spectrum utilization, AI integration, and next-generation air-interface technologies,” Brian Daly, AT&T Fellow and AVP of Standards & Industry Alliances and working group leader on the white paper said in a press release.
The white paper provides input on the ITU’s approach in five basic areas:
- Enhanced performance: Includes significant improvements in data rates, latency and reliability. The goals are high-speed, ultra-reliable low-latency communications for industries and consumers.
- New usage scenarios: Looks at advanced use cases, including immersive multimedia, smart industrial applications, digital twin, ubiquitous connectivity and the integration of AI to create intelligent, self-learning systems.
- Global harmonization: Looks at alignment of global standards, spectrum policies and regulatory frameworks to ensure interoperability and a unified approach to 6G development
- Strategic 6G initiatives: Describers U.S. and other American governments’ initiation of research and policy activities to drive 6G innovation,
- Sustainability and security: Explores the ITU’s promotion of energy-efficient technologies and robust security measures to safeguard data integrity, privacy, and national security
5G Americas’ board of governors includes Airspan Networks Inc., Antel, AT&T, Ciena, Cisco, Crown Castle, Ericsson, Liberty Latin America, Mavenir, Nokia, Qualcomm Incorporated, Rogers Communications, Samsung, T-Mobile US, Inc., and Telefónica.
