New project assesses AI companies’ trustworthiness

Team with thumbs up

Google Gemini is the most upfront and open about their use of artificial intelligence, according to The AI Trustworthiness Ranking, a new project from Cybernews.

The project assessed 500 companies in 21 AI categories in 36 countries. Assessment scores are 0 to 500 and are based on publicly available information on four weighted pillar categories. The ratings detail how clearly companies explain how they collect, share, use, and retain user data.

After Google, the leading companies are Krisp, Fireflies.ai, Adobe, Magnific, Writesonic, Veryfi, Salesforce, Grammarly, and Lovable. Companies that scored more than 75 in the project are deemed to be AI Trustworthiness Leaders for the year.

The lowest average score was 32 in the security category. Companies score a 90 for organization transparency. The industry sector with the highest rating was office and productivity companies, with a 78. Music and audio companies were lowest at 54.

The project found that 63% of all companies that use AI do not clearly disclose whether the data to which they have access is used to train their AI models, and 65% do not disclose how long they retain their data.

Dr. Akshika Wijesundara, a member of the advisory board overseeing the project, said in a press release that AI companies use extremely sensitive data and must be made to handle it responsibly.

“AI is shifting from answering questions to taking actions, reading inboxes, moving money, and making decisions on our behalf. A chatbot that mishandles data is a privacy problem,” Wijesundara said in the press release about the AI trustworthiness project. She also is Co-founder of SnapDrum and TAI Labs, CTO of Tilli Kids, and Senior AI Advisor to the UN.

“An agent with broad permissions and weak governance is a security problem, with mistakes propagating through real systems at machine speed. Companies that clearly show how they protect data, use it, and govern what their AI is allowed to do will have a meaningful advantage in earning long-term trust.”
