Price the Main Factor in Mobile Phone Plan Choice: Survey

Price, more than any other criteria, is the determining factor in a consumer’s choice of a mobile phone plan, according to a new Optimum survey.
Price considerations are followed by battery life and brand when a consumer chooses a new device, the mobile phone survey found.
The findings were from a survey of more than 1,500 U.S. adults between January 2-10 of this year.
Other findings from the mobile phone survey include:
- More than one-third of Americans use AI features on their phone. This number climbs to more than half for consumers aged 18-39 and more than half for consumers with children under the age of 18 living in their household.
- One-third of consumers are planning to upgrade their mobile device within the next year, and almost two-thirds are likely to do so at a retail store.
- Almost two-thirds of U.S. mobile phone users have been with their provider for four or more years, the survey says.
- More than half of Americans aged 18-39 are financing or paying off their devices, while only 28% of those aged 55+ do.
- Nearly half of consumers find it appealing to bundle mobile, internet, and/or TV services from a single provider if a bundled offering presents an attractive price.
- 70% of those who find bundling appealing would consider a mobile bundle and 80% of Americans believe bundling internet and mobile services is more cost-effective than separating the services.
- Two-thirds of consumers believe — incorrectly — that 5G is available on all phones, and about 75% of Americans think (incorrectly again) that 5G home internet is as fast as a wired connection.
“Affordability, device and plan flexibility, and quality in a consumer’s mobile service is paramount today,” Eric Bruno, Optimum senior vice president of product management, said in a prepared statement about the mobile phone survey. “Our latest survey underscores the importance of price-conscious decisions and reveals a growing interest in bundled services.”
