U.S. News & World Report: Average Monthly U.S. Internet Bill is $89

A survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report’s 360 Reviews found that almost everyone uses the internet (95% of respondents) and a majority of them (54%) get their internet access from a bundled package.

The average cost of internet across the 2,500 people surveyed was $77 when the respondent signed up. The bill has gone up, however. The survey found that internet costs for folks now average $89 per month.

Costs may be rising. Almost half (48%) of respondents said they were paying between $41 and $80 per month for service.

The report suggests that many people don’t know precisely what they are paying for. The survey found that 38% of Americans are unsure of their download speeds.

The most common download speeds — determined in the study by having respondents take an internet speed test — are 101 Mbps to 300 Mbps, followed by 301 Mbps to 1 Gbps and 35 Mbps to 100 Mbps.

There are age/speed distinctions. The survey found that Americans older than 54 years of age have the slowest speeds at 25 Mbps to 100 Mbps. The folks with the fastest internet are those between 45 years old and 54 years old, with speeds averaging between 301 Mbps to 1 Gbps.

“The good news? Most of our respondents said their internet service is reliable and they are satisfied with it,” according to an announcement about the report. “Most (75%) deem their internet service reliable, giving it a score of 4 or 5 (with 5 being the best) on the reliability scale. That’s encouraging, especially when many Americans use their internet connection to obtain medical care, with reliable broadband access considered the ideal in this situation.”

Other results from the survey:

· New Jersey has the highest average monthly internet bill ($126), as well as the highest average internet bill increase ($28) from the advertised sign-up cost to current bill.

· Montana has the lowest average monthly internet bill ($70).

· Seventy-five percent of consumers say their internet service is reliable. South Carolinians say they have the most reliable service.
